Starting the Job Search

It’s been almost two years since I’ve written a post about what’s going on with me. Since then, a lot has changed, and I figure it’s time to write an update!

In my last post, I wrote about moving to Austin in late 2015 and joining the design and development agency Spacetime. I continued to work with Spacetime for another year after that post, until May of 2017. I had a blast working with them and our amazing clients. Seriously, if you have something you’d like to build, you should contact them.

In May 2017, one of our clients, StudioHop, informed us that they wanted to hire a development team in-house instead of continuing to contract out their development work to Spacetime. Most of my time was already being spent working with StudioHop, so it made sense for me to join them full-time.

StudioHop was special to me since I’d built their Rails app a year and a half earlier and had worked with them ever since as the sole developer. It was great to be able to continue to work with them and see their company grow. We hired another developer, expanded the product into several new cities, and built lots of new features.

Though I was enjoying my job, I was working from home and couldn’t shake the fact that one thing was missing: people.

Working remotely in a “new” city

Ever since moving to Austin in late 2015, I had been working from home and slowly becoming more of a hermit each day. Seriously. I’ve always been pretty social, but there were some days when I felt like I was forgetting how to interact with people. Also, I love Austin. It’s a fun, progressive city with rivers and lakes and nature trails, and energy. But I was/am having trouble getting connected here. I began to realize that I was missing something that was important to me.

I finally decided that it's time for me to find a local job, so I made the tough decision to leave StudioHop and am officially starting the search today for an Austin development position.

In the meantime, I am still doing contract work with StudioHop and a company called Qeepsake. I’m excited to see what happens in the next month or so!

If you are in Austin and are looking to hire a software developer, I’d love to get in touch!

Thanks for stopping by :)
